Life abord a fishing vessel

On June the 30th I finally ha the chance to go aboard a fishing vessel for a 4 day survey of squid. I have to say I was rather impressed by the size of our cabin, and even more by the meals: We had a waiter in black and white, including a little bow tie. He would stay at the head of the table and serve the food, pour water and drinks and would even refill our plates once he saw we were nearly finished (or at least asked whether we wanted a refill).
Most of the time I remained at the bridge, deciding where to trawl and keep a survey log, however once this got to boring, I went down to the factory cutting open hundreds of squid and measuring them. So now I even know the differences between male and female squid and between differing maturity stages.
I was hardly seasick at all, except for a few hours on the second day... but then the weather was really really bad then.
When it was time to go, we had hardly any work done- due to bad weather, so I had to extend the trip for another3 days! Preparing for 4 days and staying a week...thats how it goes!
However, looking forward towards my next trip!

Liberation Day

Now I am quite late again, since Liberation Day is already a week ago, but here it goes...
On the 14th of June British Forces "liberated" the Falklands from Argentine occupation, since then Liberation day is a big event down here. Being the 25th anniversary meant it was an even bigger event this year, two extra days of holiday and many VIP guests, including many veterans as well as the Earl (?) HRH Prince Edward.
Liberation day started with a service in the Cathedral followed by a military parade and speeches in the freezing cold, and then, finally (at around 11:30 AM) free drink and food in a big hall with a special imported band. For many people this is the last thing they remember before the huge hangover on Monday morning. And I got a picture of me and the Governor in his posh official outfit and funny hat with plumes on, but I am not showing that ;-)
For the rest of us, we were partying in various bars, heading for the big "Expo" on Saturday and Liberation Ball on Saturday night, the best night I had here so far, with the same brilliant band and dancing till the morning (and until I couldn't stand on my feet any more--- and not because I drank too much, me, never!!!). So, It was brilliant!
And thats now already a week ago...

Life at the end of the World

Now it is already 4 months that I moved to the Falklands, and finally I got to set up my BLOG as promised :)
Life here has been quite interesting so far, even though setteling in has been quite difficult for me.
So far I have seen loads of penguins, sooooo cute, and they are TAME!
I also experienced the joy of driving Off-Road; the worse the way, the greater the fun.

I also joined into a view "hash runs" similar to treasure hunts with a lot of drinks afterwards, learn playing netball, and, strangest of all, am spinning wool!
On the other side I am becoming Amazon No. 1 customer (I have to shop, and since there are no shops here....)

Sooo, thats should be enough for my first entry, and I will soon follow up!
