On June the 30th I finally ha the chance to go aboard a fishing vessel for a 4 day survey of squid. I have to say I was rather impressed by the size of our cabin, and even more by the meals: We had a waiter in black and white, including a little bow tie. He would stay at the head of the table and serve the food, pour water and drinks and would even refill our plates once he saw we were nearly finished (or at least asked whether we wanted a refill).
Most of the time I remained at the bridge, deciding where to trawl and keep a survey log, however once this got to boring, I went down to the factory cutting open hundreds of squid and measuring them. So now I even know the differences between male and female squid and between differing maturity stages.
I was hardly seasick at all, except for a few hours on the second day... but then the weather was really really bad then.
When it was time to go, we had hardly any work done- due to bad weather, so I had to extend the trip for another3 days! Preparing for 4 days and staying a week...thats how it goes!
However, looking forward towards my next trip!
